<image:title>Videos - Gabriola Roots: The Land Provides</image:title>
<image:caption>A 30 minute documentary produced by the Gabriola Historical Society and Museum, THE LAND PROVIDES focuses on the unique relationships islanders have to the land itself, from farming and harvesting to protecting wildlife and preserving the sanctity of the land. It begins with the earliest islanders, the Coast Salish-Snuneymuxw, and then documents some of the settlers who followed, like the generations of Grays and the enduring Boultons. An ancient fishing and harvesting island in the middle of the Salish Sea, Gabriola today is peopled with those who not only cherish the forest, rock and sea, but who treasure the land itself. A common thread in the seven stories is the call to protect the land and wildlife, so that this island may continue to nurture and provide for generations to come. <image:title>Videos - Between Wood & Water: the Dorothy Story</image:title>
<image:caption>BETWEEN WOOD AND WATER takes an intimate look at Dorothy, the oldest still-sailing vessel in Canada, who has fired the hearts and imaginations of British Columbians for over a century. From the moment she slipped into the waters of Victoria's inner harbour in 1897, the 30-ft wooden sloop excited attention wherever she went with her beautiful shape and heartbreakingly pure lines. A contemporary restoration drama, a maritime mystery and a historical love story rolled into one, BETWEEN WOOD AND WATER documents the life of Dorothy, the oldest functioning sailboat in Canada. The upcoming one-hour documentary centres on Dorothy's restoration by Tony Grove, a local boatbuilder and artist whose experience and intimate knowledge of wooden boats led the Maritime Museum to commission him to restore Dorothy. The film culminates in her re-launch this fall at the 2014 Victoria Classic Boat Festival and Race, as the 116-year old boat contends for her title as the oldest and fastest little wooden ship in the west! <image:caption>Project and final report titled “Walking in Truth: Unsettling, Decolonizing, and Learning Relational Ways of Being for Key Organizations on Gabriola Island” by Tobi Elliott. >> Click to Download paper (184 pages) An Engaged Leadership Project in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In Leadership (Royal Roads University, 2023). In service and partnership with the Truth and Reconciliation Committee of the Gabriola Museum. The purpose for this Engaged Leadership Project (ELP) for my MA in Leadership Studies Capston was to invite community organizations, non-profits, local governments, and other agencies on Gabriola Island to examine their existing processes and structures, discover ways they might decolonize and integrate reconciliation principles into their organizations, and to explore new ways of engaging and operating in order to create a foundation for stronger working relationships with the Snuneymuxw First Nation (SFN). The graphic on the left was produced to help gently remind us how to live and walk from a place of cultural humility, in learning, as we seek to let go of our own narratives and learn better ways of belonging to the land together. With thanks to all participants, and especially Lisa Wilcox, who is a pivotal voice in shaping my understanding of the lived reality and experience of Indigenous Peoples in the Gulf Islands.</image:caption>
